What is the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony?
In the United States, misdemeanors and felonies are distinguished from one another by severity of punishment. Any act that warrants less than a year in prison as penalty is considered to be a misdemeanor, while acts that are punished by one year or more in prison are felonies. Misdemeanors are lesser crimes such as public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and drug possession. Felonies are more serious law infractions such as arson, robbery, rape and murder.
