What are Miranda Rights?
Every time a police officer takes a suspected criminal under custody, he or she is required to give the offender the Miranda warning. This statement informs the party at fault of his or her legal rights, which include the following:
- The right to remain silent
- Knowledge that anything the individual says can be used against him or her in court
- The right to consult an attorney
- The right to a government-appointed attorney, if he or she cannot afford one
