How is bail set?
Bail is an amount of money set by a judge that an offender must pay in order to be released from prison prior to his or her hearing. When he or she shows up at the court, the bail money is returned. The amount of a bail is set based on the following:
- Severity of the crime (how severely it injured others)
- Criminal record of the offender
- Danger posed to the community by the suspect’s release
- Offender’s familial, community and job ties
