Felonies
A felony is one of the most serious crimes that an individual can commit. As opposed to misdemeanors, which classify lesser criminal acts such as violating traffic laws and disorderly conduct, felonies encompass acts that cause or have the potential to cause significant physical harm and/or damage to other people. In the United States, any crime that is deemed punishable by over one year in prison is considered to be a felony.
Examples of Felonies
Felonies encompass a wide range of acts that vary in severity. Examples of felonies include the following criminal actions:
- Fraud
- Aggravated assault
- Grand theft
- Burglary
- Embezzlement
- Rape
- Torture
- Arson
- Murder
The classification of felonious acts and their punishments vary from state to state. Nevada divides felonies into categories “A” through “E”. A category “A” felony is the gravest crime a person can commit, and the punishment for such an act can either be life in prison or the death penalty. First degree murder is considered to be a category “A” felony. A category “E” felony is a lesser crime, and it may be punishable by one to four years in prison. Unlawful use of a controlled substance, for example, is classified as a category “E” felony.
