Child Abuse
On a weekly basis, the United States Child Protective Services (CPS) receives over 50,000 reports of child abuse and child neglect. This amounts to millions of American children every year who are mistreated in some form or fashion. While not all incidents are investigated, approximately 67% of them are supported by enough evidence to warrant further examination.
Those who have been accused of and charged with abusing a child face very grave consequences. If you are convicted of abusing or neglecting a child, you may be required to serve time in jail and will not be allowed to interact with children again – at least, not without supervision.
Types of Child Abuse
Child abuse encompasses all actions that result in the physical or psychological mistreatment of a youth. In general, there are four main types of child abuse:
- Neglect, which comprises approximately 60% of all child abuse cases, includes all acts of failing to adequately provide food, shelter, love, and care to the child.
- Physical Abuse, which comprises approximately 20% of all child abuse cases, includes all acts of causing intentional physical harm to the child.
- Sexual Abuse, which comprises approximately 10% of all child abuse cases, includes all acts of exposing the child to sexual acts, either directly or indirectly.
- Emotional Abuse, which comprises approximately 7% of all child abuse cases, includes all acts (both verbal and physical) that cause emotional damage to the child.
All forms of child abuse are taken very seriously in the United States. Those who have been charged with abusing a child will need the help of a qualified criminal defense lawyer to represent them in court.
